This lean, efficient horror flick stands well above most bloated blockbusters. Dog Soldiers follows a military squad on a training mission in the Scottish wilds, where they run into a pack of werewolves. There’s nothing fancy about the plot–the soldiers hole up in a farmhouse and desperately try to fend off the werewolves until dawn–but the script is full of smart dialogu and clever ideas, the direction is dynamic, and the performances (from Kevin McKidd, Sean Pertwee, Emma Cleasby, and Liam Cunningham, among a solid cast of relative unknowns) are strong and committed throughout. Dog Soldiers pays homage to Night of the Living Dead, Aliens, and The Evil Dead, among other films, but the references are woven into the fabric of the movie. An unpretentious, tension-inducing flick like this is a pleasant reminder that even crude special effects can be more evocative than expensive computer flashiness. –Bret Fetzer

Mark Medoff’s tough play about deafness is sweetened and softened in this 1986 film adaptation directed by Randa Haines (Wrestling Ernest Hemingway). William Hurt plays a teacher newly hired at a school for deaf children, and Marlee Matlin is the deaf and withdrawn janitor who captures his attention. Romantic and heartfelt, the film makes its audience care very much about its two leading characters, and wince when Hurt’s well-meaning instructor allows Matlin’s handicap to become a problem. Haines develops some interesting visual ideas to underscore the isolation of Matlin’s world, particularly a lovely refrain that finds Matlin swimming alone at night. The drama is cut somewhat by the bouncy energy and good humor of Hurt’s students. Piper Laurie is very good in a supporting role as Matlin’s mother. –Tom Keogh

Blu bounds into her first feature-length film ready to sing. She gets sidetracked along the way, of course, but that’s part of the brilliant Blu’s Clus formula. Each half-hour TV show presents engaging, easy-to-grasp mini-mysteries that are within toddlers’ reach. This time Blu; her huge-eyed, slightly loopy human companion, Steve; and their cadre of talking-object friends are scurrying around, preparing for a backyard music show that day. Everybody picks a number to perform; Blu’s is a dut with Tickety Tock, but the clock contracts laryngitis. Who will be Blu’s new partner? A game of Blu’s Clus reveals the hardly reluctant replacement. The standard discovery of three clus followed by the usual wind-down song would add up to a colossal disappointment in a feature film, so substantial rounding-out is provided. Steve stumbles onto a keyboard inhabited by a note called G-Clef (the unmistakable voice of Ray Charles), who gives a tour of how to make a song. First you pick the notes, then you work on rhythm, then comes tempo, and, last but not least, “you’ve got to give it soul.” This movie’s themes include perseverance (Tickety Tock can’t sing but finds a way to contribute anyway) and self-empowerment. Blu’s Big Musical Movie is a feast for little eyes and ears; the sets are so colorful they hurt grown-up eyes, and the songs–especially the one that gets the Charles treatment–are all sing-along-with-me winners. –Tammy La Gorce

Humphrey Bogart is in familiar territory as an American expatriate in the Middle East, selling arms to the Syrian rebels under the nose of the occupying French army in 1925 Damascus.
